Qatar participated Tuesday in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO), held via video conferencing.
The celebration was held at the headquarters of the organisation in the Tunisian Republic, and Qatar was represented by Secretary-General of the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science Dr Hamda Hassan al-Sulaiti.
In her speech during the occasion, Dr Hamda al-Sulaiti highlighted the path of joint work between Qatar and ALECSO, stressing the keenness of Qatar under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, "may God protect and preserve him", to be a member and an active component in its performance, whether through the parent organisation, or through its offices and subsidiary centers in Arab capitals.
She also pointed out how the growing relations between Qatar and the organisation contributed to co-ordinating joint regional efforts aimed at emphasising the main role of education, culture and science in shaping the consciousness of Arab people, promoting a culture of peace in the minds, working to protect human heritage in Arab countries, and supporting projects to develop educational systems and the protection of Islamic culture in Palestine.
Al-Sulaiti revealed some activities, projects and events implemented by Qatar with the participation of the organisation, including but not limited to fostering dialogue among civilizations and cultures, regional projects to deal with crises and natural disasters, and the Alliance of Arab Cities in combating extremism and exclusion, and evaluating educational curricula in Qatar, protection of people with special needs and opportunities in the use of information technology, projects to protect and support heritage and rehabilitate workers in archaeological museums.
In addition to the project of developing the capabilities of Arab youth in the field of Arab mobile applications, and campaigns to protect human heritage in many Arab countries such as Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Palestine from all dangers that threaten it, noting that Qatar's contribution to the Organisation's projects is numerous and extends for many years past.
She emphasised the Arab organisation's endeavour, since its establishment to preserve Arab culture and advance the causes of educational, cultural, scientific and environmental development, and the development of the Arabic language and Arab and Islamic culture within the Arab world. She said this is due to the organisation's belief in the important and vital role that education and culture play in building the human, moral and behavioural system, and promoting the values of citizenship and a sense of belonging to it.
Also, she referred to the interests of ALECSO since its establishment in issues related to the advancement of the education sectors in the Arab world, developing and supporting policies, systems and programmes to modernise educational systems and enhancing its role in building human potential and achieving sustainable development in the Arab world. Al-Sulaiti added that the organisation sought to bring Arab cultures closer and work to harmonise and interact with other people's cultures through dialogue on cultures and translation.
Al-Sulaiti praised the role of Qatar's National Commission for Education, Culture and Science in supporting and strengthening the relationship between the organisation and the relevant state ministries and institutions, as well as exchanging opinions and advice on the most appropriate ways and means to benefit from ALECSO, and what it provides of technical courses, activities, programs and useful experiences for the sustainable development plan to the state.
