Nation must fight virus ‘vigorously’: PM

India reported another record daily spike of 45,720 new Covid-19 infections and 1,129 deaths, a health ministry bulletin said yesterday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned the country must keep fighting “vigorously” until a vaccine is available.
The total infections in India have now touched 1.24mn, placing it third among countries worst hit by the virus.
Only the US and Brazil have more cases.
India’s fatality rate is still among the lowest in the world at around 24 per 1mn population and the recovery rate is above 60%, a health ministry spokeswoman said.
The spike in deaths on Wednesday was due to a retrospective addition of 444 cases by Tamil Nadu.
Modi said until a vaccine comes, India needed to fight vigorously against the coronavirus.
“Today’s programme is an example of the fact that even in this coronavirus crisis, the country has not stopped,” Modi said at a virtual foundation stone laying ceremony of a water supply project in north-eastern India.
“Till the vaccine comes, where we have to fight vigorously against the coronavirus, development works also have to be carried forward with full force,” he added.
Meanwhile, as the number of Covid-19 cases continue to rise in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan yesterday expressed confidence that the state and its people will come through these trying times and that a ‘Covid brigade’ will be formed to handle the situation.
Vijayan said there were 1,078 Covid cases in Kerala as of yesterday.
“With this the total number of positive cases has reached 16,110, of which 9,458 are presently positive. Of the day’s positive cases, 798 are local infectees. At present the state has 428 hotspots,” he said.
