MME inaugurates Local Dates Festival 2020 at Al Meera


The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) today launched the fifth Local Dates Festival 2020 in cooperation with Al Meera Consumer Goods Company (Q.P.S.C.).

Al Meera is hosting the Local Dates Festival for the first time this year, through more than 50 branches across Qatar, in line with the precautionary measures in force in the country. Previously the festival was held annually in Souq Waqif.

The festival runs across all Al Meera branches from July 20, 2020 until the target stock of 300 tons of local dates lasts. Local dates are produced on more than 100 local farms, and Al Meera branches have designated special places for displaying local dates in all its branches, in a way that contributes to its dissemination and give it priority in the display and competition in the market.

The Director of the Agricultural Affairs Department Yousuf Khalid Al Khulaifi said: "The Local Dates Festival lies within the ministry's framework in improving the visibility of Qatari products in the local market. The ministry holds the marketing of local produce as a priority that can significantly aid in improving the quality of local agricultural production whilst reducing waste, to achieve an overall increase in demand. The combined efforts are aimed at motivating the local farm owners to increase production and improve quality using modern technology."

He added that cooperation with Al Meera Consumer Goods Company came as it is one of the most important national consumer societies in the State of Qatar, and always supports local national products. It was the first cooperating company with the Ministry to launch marketing programs such as the distinguished vegetables program and the Qatar Farms Program.

The Director of the Agricultural Affairs Department at the Ministry affirmed that cooperation was done with Al Meera to display fresh products from local farms in all its branches in the country, as it provides a good opportunity to market local farm products and also allows the consumer obtain a product of high quality and good prices.

This year more than 100 farms, he said, participated in the festival, expecting that approximately 300 tons will be marketed during this year compared to previous years, where different types of fresh dates are provided, the most important of which Al-Barhi, Shishi, Ikhlas and others.

The locally fresh dates have excellent production and marketing qualities, as it is fresh and of high quality with high interest of consumers. (QNA)
