QDA offers education for kids with diabetes via digital channels

Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), a member of Qatar Foundation, in collaboration with Sidra Medicine, organised a discussion via video telecommunication for parents of children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes recently.
The meeting was attended by about 100 parents and Dr Abdullah al-Hamaq, executive director of QDA.
The main speaker of the meeting, Dr Fawzyia Ali al-Khalaf, senior attending physician – Endocrinology/Diabetes Children’s Clinical Management Group.
Division of Endocrinology, assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar, and director, Clinical Services – Endocrinology/Diabetes at Sidra Medicine, addressed the audience with educational topics and responded to their enquiries.
The meeting also had an interactive session where parents asked many questions of concern to the health of their children, such as how to take care of them in the light of Covid-19, how to deal with the insulin pump and also about mental health and procedures when returning to school at the start of the next academic year.
“The association is ready to provide all possible assistance in training school nurses and school staff,” Dr al-Hamaq noted.
“There have been no cases of Covid-19 among children with diabetes in Qatar. We implement the necessary health procedures and follow up on the children at their homes by phone instead of them having to come to the hospital,” said Dr al-Khalaf, who advised parents about the importance of controlling their children’s diabetes by following the prescribed diet plan, taking insulin doses prescribed by the doctor and through exercising.
