Dbeissy, El Kholy sizzle at the Qatar Online Racing Championship

Mansour Dbeissy and Ahmed El Kholy were on fire yesterday as they won the third round of their respective groups at the Qatar Online Racing Championship (QORC) for rally cars.
Dbeissy won five of the seven stages at the virtual WRC8 German Rally set on an asphalt terrain to finish 57 seconds ahead of his nearest rival Khalid al-Maraghi in Group A. Dbeissy and al-Maraghi joined group topper Zakariya al-Ofi of Oman for Monday’s final race.
Al-Ofi, who had won the first and second rounds was off colour yesterday, winning just one stage and finished third. But he had done enough to secure the table topper status.
The real drama, however, was played out later in Group B race. While QORC Auto champion El Kholy was in fine form winning four stages as he topped the timesheet, Kuwait’s Mishari al-Thefiri produced a stunning drive to make it to the final after a tie with Adel Abdulla.
Al-Thefiri, who was fourth before the start of the third round, finished behind El Kholy yesterday. Abdulla, who was unbeaten in the qualifying stages, failed to repeat the form once again and slid to overall fourth from second. But having tied with 100 points with al-Thefiri, he made it to the final as there was an extra spot for the final race. Originally only three from each group were slated to qualify for the final. Ammar Bulushi finished top of the group with 113 points, six better than El Kholy, despite finishing third yesterday.
Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) Executive Director Amro al-Hamad said: “They (al-Thefiri and Abdulla) were tied with 100 points. We still had one extra space in the final race. It will be interesting that way as we will have racers from Qatar, Oman and Kuwait in the final including one ex-world champion.”
The winner will receive QR15,000 in prize money. The runner-up will take home QR13,000, while third-placed competitor will get QR10,000.
The online competition, conducted by the QMMF has gained in popularity after it was held for cars and bikes in the last two months. In total 28 competitors have registered for the championship.
