Metro Manila remains the hardest-hit by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in the country, a Cabinet official said, after President Rodrigo Duterte extended the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the capital region and in other areas where the risk of the contagion remains high.
Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr, chief implementer of the government’s national policy against the pandemic, said Covid-19 cases remained largely concentrated in Metro Manila due to the high population size and density of the region.
“We saw an increasing number of cases because the epicentre of Covid-19 is really here in Metro Manila. But I hope that the trend will improve in the near future,” Galvez said during a virtual press briefing.
“That’s why we are trying to ramp up testing, so that we can improve the cases in Metro Manila,” he added.
More than half of the country’s coronavirus infections are in Metro Manila, according to the Department of Health (DoH). South of Metro Manila, Calabarzon has the second highest number of coronavirus cases.
This is followed by Central Visayas, Central Luzon, Davao Region, Western Visayas and Ilocos Region.
In Metro Manila, Quezon City, the country’s most populous city, reported the most number of coronavirus infections. It is followed by Manila, Paranaque City and Makati City.
The least affected localities in Metro Manila are Navotas and Pateros.
To contain the spread of Covid-19, Duterte has extended the enhanced community quarantine up to May 15 in Metro Manila, Benguet, Pangasinan, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Albay, Catanduanes, Davao del Norte and Davao City.
The same stay-at-home orders and suspension of most work and mass transportation will also remain in effect in “high-risk” provinces or those with high number of Covid-19 cases.
