For the second straight race meeting, jockey Marco Casamento and champion trainer Jassim Mohamed Ghazali combined to claim the feature at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s Al Rayyan Park, this time the Loyalty Cup on turf yesterday.
The 2000m Thoroughbred Handicap run saw Khalifa bin Sheail al-Kuwari’s Tremendous Leap coast home comfortably with two lengths to spare as the rivals jostled for minor places behind the gelding.
On Wednesday, Casamento had ridden Danayen to The Late Abdul Aziz Al Fuhaid Cup, the feature for Thoroughbreds on dirt.
Yesterday, apprentice rider Gary Sanchez registered a treble after riding two maidens and a handicap winner.
After riding Mohamed Ali Yousef al-Sheeb’s Saoud and Mohamed Riyaz-trained Al Fayz to maiden victories, Sanchez also guided Umm Qarn’s Qatar Bolt, schooled by Alban de Mieulle, to a fine two-and-a-half length victory in the 2800m Thoroughbred Handicap run for four-year-old and older horses rated 85 and below.
It was De Mieulle’s second winner on the day after Qatari rider Faleh Bughanaim guided Al Shaqab Racing’s Albasos to a victory in a maiden.
The Frenchman completed a treble of his own with another Al Shaqab Racing horse — Maiuf. Ronan Thomas, who had helmed the colt to a victory on dirt in January was in the saddle of the four-year-old once again yesterday in the Purebred Arabians miler.
A fantastic ride by Thomas saw Maiuf pick up a fine one-and-a-half length victory in the race for four-year-olds.
Thomas had earlier opened the meeting with a close win astride Khalifa bin Ali bin Mohamed al-Attiyah-trained Gaslight in a local Thoroughbred maiden.
Zuhair Mohsen’s ward Jabalaly may have been far from impressive on his Qatar debut in January, but yesterday the Al Bida Racing gelding showed some capability under Soufiane Saadi to top a Class 4 handicap for Thoroughbreds.
It was Mohsen’s first victory this season.
Injaaz Stud’s Qate’e continued his momentum this season yesterday, racing to his second victory this term, besides having picked up places on other outings. Helmed by Marco Casamento for champion trainer Jassim Mohamed Ghazali in the seven-furlong local Thoroughbred Handicap run, the five-year-old held off a duo ridden by brothers Rashid Ali al-Marri and Meteb Ali al-Marri — Nayer Bu Thaila and Admiral — by a little over a length.
