A scintillating ride by Ronan Thomas astride Umm Qarn’s Dabaab saw the mare pick up a fantastic feature win as she topped the Dukhan Cup for Purebred Arabian fillies and mares at Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s Al Rayyan Park yesterday.
The Alban de Mieulle-trained mare was unstoppable in the 1700m feature for four-year-old and older horses as the grey daughter of Munjiz beat the competition by a little more than eight lengths for her first win this season.
The six-year-old had been getting progressively better his season having finished in the top three on her other two outings coming into yesterday’s race, where she beat Alexander Reznikov-ridden AJS Jamra.
It was the second win on the day for owner-trainer-jockey trio, with Sealine remaining unbeaten on the surface to top the Purebred Arabian Handicap for horses rated 90 and below.
In the 1900m race, which was the six-year-old longest distance, Sealine edged out Ivan Rossi-helmed Aneeq at the post by a neck for her fourth win.
Reznikov was astride two winners, both for Qatari trainer Hadi Nasser al-Ramzani — Khalifa Mohamed al-Attiyah’s Hathlool in the Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate and Al Jeryan Stud’s Thierry in the Thoroughbred Handicap for horses rated 85 and below.
Another trainer-jockey duo to notch a double on the day were champion trainer Jassim Mohamed Ghazali and Jamie Spencer. Spencer was astride Injaaz Stud’s Shakour as the five-year-old won for the first time at Al Rayyan Park, winning the 1900m Thoroughbred Novice Plate, and then guided Injaaz Stud’s prolific Izzthatright to the gelding’s 20th victory in the penultimate race of the day for Class 2 Thoroughbreds.
The evening began with Qatari rider Meteb Ali al-Marri riding his fifth winner of the season with Dalal Al Brooq shedding her maiden status in a six-furlong sprint for Local Thoroughbreds. Another Thoroughbred to race to his first win was Hamad Ahmed al-Malki al-Jehani-trained Zarandi, who also won a six-furlong sprint with Carlos Henrique in the saddle.
