Iraqi television announces killing of Qassem Soleimani in airstrike


Iraqi television announced Friday morning that commander of the Quds Force Qassem Soleimani and Deputy Chairman of the Popular Mobilization Forces Abu Mahdi Al Muhandis were killed in an airstrike that targeted their vehicles near Baghdad International Airport.

The Iraqi television said that the airstrike killed eight people including Iraqis and Iranian. Iranian news agency IRNA confirmed the news, saying the two were targeted by American strikes after they got out of the airport. 

Killing at directions of Trump: Pentagon 

The US Pentagon that the killing of Qassem Soleimani was done at the direction of US President Donald Trump.

A statement from the Pentagon said that the strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans and added that the United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect its people and interests around the world.

"General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region. General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more," the statement said.

Iran Foreign Minister Condemns killing of Soleimani

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif denounced Friday theUS forces' killing of commander of the Quds Force Qassem Soleimani, describing it as a criminal act.
IRNA news agency reported today that Zarif said the Foreign Ministry will deploy all its resources to ensure that theUS administration is held accountable for that escalation.

Iran summons Swiss Charge d'Affaires to protest

Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned Friday the Swiss Charge affaires in Tehran, theUS interest section in Iran, to protest theUS airstrike that killed commander of the Quds Force Qassem Soleimani.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi tweeted today that the Charge d'Affaires of Switzerland's embassy in Tehran was summoned to the Foreign Ministry to hear Iran's strong protest to the airstrikes that killed Soleimani. He added that they informed the Swiss diplomat that theUS amounted to state terrorism and theUS regime will have to stand fully accountable for its consequences.
