Leicester City midfielder James Maddison was included yesterday in Gareth Southgate’s squad for their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Montenegro and Kosovo despite his controversial casino visit during the last international break.
Maddison pulled out of the squad to face the Czech Republic and Bulgaria last month because of illness but the uncapped 22-year-old was pictured in a casino during the 2-1 defeat in Prague. Defender John Stones, who has started Manchester City’s past two Premier League games, and Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been handed England recalls in the 27-man squad. Everton defender Michael Keane has been dropped and there is still no place for Dele Alli but Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi is back in.
Hudson-Odoi, who has two caps, is promoted back from the under-21 squad following his return from the Achilles injury he suffered at the end of last season. Stamford Bridge teammate Mason Mount is also included despite coming off in Tuesday’s 4-4 Champions League draw against Ajax with an ankle problem. England host Montenegro on November 14 with victory enough to book their spot at Euro 2020. They then travel to Kosovo three days later.
Gomes could return before
end of the season, says Silva
Everton midfielder Andre Gomes could play again before the end of the season after surgery on his broken ankle went well, his club manager Marco Silva said. The 26-year-old Portuguese international suffered a fracture dislocation of the right ankle after being tripped by Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min in Sunday’s 1-1 draw.
Silva said the news from the club medical staff had been mildly encouraging following Monday’s surgery and suggested a return could be feasible before the end of the campaign in mid-May. “It’s not easy for us to give a sure date about when he will return,” Silva said ahead of this weekend’s match with fellow strugglers Southampton.
“What’s in our mind and the feedback I have from our medical staff is that it’s possible we will see Andre playing again this season. Of course, it’s not something we are 100 per cent sure about, but we have good possibilities to do that. He is strong, he will keep strong for sure and will become stronger as a player.”
Eder recalled as holders Portugal target Euro 2020 finals
Lokomotiv Moscow forward Eder, whose goal won Portugal Euro 2016, earned a recall to his country’s squad Thursday for their upcoming qualifiers for next summer’s finals against Lithuania and Luxembourg.
The 31-year-old returns as part of a 25-man squad named by coach Fernando Santos as Portugal attempt to lock down a place at Euro 2020 over the final two qualifying rounds. They host Lithuania, the bottom side in Group B, in the Algarve on November 14 before making the trip to Luxembourg three days later.
Man City defender
Mendy given France recall
Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was recalled to the France squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Moldova and Albania. Left-back Mendy, 25, was part of the squad that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia but has not played for his country since winning his ninth cap in a UEFA Nations League game against the Netherlands in September last year.
France are without goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris, who has just undergone surgery on a dislocated elbow, as they look to clinch their place at next year’s Euro 2020 finals. Paul Pogba and Lucas Hernandez are also sidelined, but Kylian Mbappe returns after the Paris Saint-Germain striker was forced to withdraw from the last squad due to fitness problems. Olivier Giroud is also included despite a lack of game time at his club Chelsea.
France are level atop qualifying Group H with Turkey on 19 points, four points clear of Iceland with two matches remaining and the top two advancing to the 24-team finals.
Ederson doubt for
Liverpool clash
Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson could be a doubt for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Liverpool after being substituted at half-time in their dramatic Champions League 1-1 draw against Atalanta in Milan on Wednesday. Claudio Bravo was introduced after the break for the Premier League champions, but the game finished in chaos as the substitute goalkeeper was sent off 10 minutes from time with right-back Kyle Walker finishing the match in goal.
“It’s a muscular problem,” said manager Pep Guardiola. “It was a risk so we took him off as he was feeling it late in the first half. We don’t know (whether Ederson will be fit to face Liverpool).”
Liverpool lead second-placed Man City by six points, and a win at Anfield on Sunday would be a massive boost for Guardiola’s side in their bid to defend the Premier League title. City are already without defenders Aymeric Laporte and Oleksandr Zinchenko, while David Silva is also struggling with a thigh problem ahead of the weekend.
