The 4th ‘Association of Sports Institutes in Asia’ (ASIA) congress concluded yesterday with members and participants agreeing to several collaborative ventures that will see joint events, training camps and research amongst members. On the penultimate night the participants enjoyed a gala dinner held at La Cigale Hotel and saw the acknowledgement and honouring of sponsors, partners and speakers at the Congress. Dr Duncan Simpson, Head of Mental Conditioning at IMG Academy gave a presentation on supporting staff well-being before the guests tucked into their dinner.
In his speech, Dr Simpson underscored the importance of high-performance sports staff embracing awareness of one’s well-being and when to say No and Yes at workplace in order to maximise the best of one’s output. Dr Simpson summed up his presentation with the ABC of Awareness, Balance and Connection, as the key cogs of a health and sound outlook to supporting and maintaining employees’ physical and mental health at work.
Dr Daniel Lee, Associate Director of Elite Training Science & Technology at Hong Kong Sports Institute, gave a vote of thanks to wind up the evening.
Dr Philip Graham Smith, Head of Biochemistry and Innovation at Aspire Academy in summing up the ASIA Congress on its conclusion said, “The 4th ASIA Congress has exceeded expectations in what we were able to accomplish over the three days. It was a great opportunity for our Aspire Academy high performance sports coaches and staff to meet, interact and exchange collaborative ideas with like-minded colleagues from Asia as well as hear from international professional in Sports Science Innovation. The Congress allowed all participants to network and explore opportunities for working together on among other things, training camps and knowledge and information sharing. This has been done with an open-minded attitude to learn with the right spirit to share and led to many fruitful and beneficial contacts and partnerships. All in all, the 4th Association of Sports Institutes in Asia Congress has been a success.”
Markus Egger, Director of Sport and Strategy Aspire Academy, said, “Based on the conversations I had with our friends from other high-performance institutes, they were really impressed by our people and how they prepared this event. Overall, it was a great event.”
Speaking about the next steps for ASIA, Egger said, “I think there are two different paces when it comes to that. First, there is the group of the founding members - the Japan Sports Council, the Singapore Sports Institute, the Hong Kong Sports Institute and us – and this group is driving the entire community. Then there is the other group that is gradually growing with new members coming in. During this congress we had new sport institutes from China and Cambodia joining us and we hope to have another one from South Korea becoming a part of ASIA soon. And these collaborations are very important, because the world of sport is moving very fast and we must be able to catch up and, if possible, lead.”
Dr Duncan Simpson, Head of Mental Conditioning, IMG Academy, said, “This event has been fantastic. The ability to collaborate with people from all over the world, mostly from the Asia region is something that I have not had the opportunity to do. So, the ability to learn and collaborate and hopefully to share a bit about what we are doing at IMG has just been a fantastic experience.”
Commenting on his first visit to Qatar and the success of event, QUINTIC founder Dr Paul Hurrion said, “It’s my first time here in Qatar and what a fantastic reception it has been for me. Aspire Academy is just phenomenal and really a world class facility fit for Olympians and elite sport athletes. The very fortunate students’ athletes training at Aspire are exceptionally privileged and it’s easy to see why Qatar as a national is doing well in sport- they make absolute preparation in sport development.”
